Whataburger: A Quick Overview
You’ll probably spot Whataburger from a mile away, thanks to its eye-catching orange roofing. All 800-or-so locations in the southern United States have orange-and-white striped roofing unique to the fast-food restaurant chain. Their most famous menu item is the aptly-named Whataburger.
Whataburger was first opened in 1950 by co-founders Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton, who wanted to open a hamburger place unique to the masses. They wanted a burger that was held in two hands and tasted so incredibly good, it would make you go, “What a burger!” at first bite. They achieved just that and opened up their first store in Corpus Christi, Texas, with Whataburger burgers selling at 25 cents a pop.
A year later, a dispute in prices led to Dobson and Burton severing their partnership, and they agreed that Burton would own all the Whataburger locations in San Antonio, Texas, and Dobson would own the rest of the company and the franchises. As of 2018, there are over 800 Whataburger locations all over the United States.
